Plaquemine to get nighttime Mardi Gras parade

PLAQUEMINE, LA (AP)- Plaquemine
is planning its first nighttime Mardi Gras parade next year.

The event
is reportedly being organized as a tribute to Iberville Parish native Brenda
Comeaux, a Mardi Gras enthusiast who died of cancer several years ago.

Businessman
Chris Daigle, president of the Krewe of Comogo, recently told parish officials his
krewe's inaugural parade will have at least 10 floats he hopes will feature
several Mardi Gras krewes from the parish.

The Krewe
of Comogo parade will take place on Feb. 11.

Daigle said
Plaquemine Mardi Gras krewes traditionally have only hosted annual galas, not
parades.

Daigle said
he has received commitments from several local businesses interested in
procuring a float.

Skydiving and BMX Bike Riding: Does This Stuff Actually Make Google Glass Cool? [Chatroom]

If today's Google I/O keynote is any indication, Google's idea of being edgy during its presentation of Google Glass is to have a bunch extreme sports bros roll-in/drop-in on bikes and parachutes. But for all the time and effort and money that likely went into this grandstanding, is this actually impressive? Let's talk about it. More »

Searching for the origin of muscles

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A characteristic feature of most animals is their ability to move quickly with the help of their musculature. Animals that can move are able to flee, hunt for prey, travel long distances or conquer new habitats. The evolution of muscles was thus a fundamental step during animal evolution. While the structure and function of muscles, especially of vertebrates, have been intensively studied, the evolutionary origin of smooth and striated muscles has so far been enigmatic. Comparative genome and gene expression studies, performed by researchers Patrick Steinmetz, Johanna Kraus and Ulrich Technau in an international collaboration with researchers from Germany, France and Australia, revealed the origin muscle components in ancestral animals such as sea anemones, jellyfish or sponges.

Gene duplication

Phylogenetic comparisons showed that one of the crucial structural proteins of striated muscles of vertebrates, a "myosin" motor protein, originated by gene duplication. "As this specific myosin has so far only been found in muscle cells, we expected that its origin coincided with the evolution of muscle cells. We were very surprised to see that the 'muscle myosin' evolved probably in unicellular organisms, long before the first animals lived," explains Ulrich Technau who led the study.

Research in sponges ?

"In sponges, that all lack muscles, the 'muscle myosin' appears to play a role in regulating the water flow," comments Gert W?rheide (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t Munich), whose team was investigating muscle proteins in sponges together with Michael Nickel (University of Jena) and Bernard Degnan (University of Queensland).

? and jellyfish

Jellyfish occupy a special phylogenetic position to understand the evolution of muscles. They are cnidarians, an animal group that originated more than 600 million years ago, and possess striated muscles. Due to the striking similarities between striated muscles of vertebrates and jellyfish, it was so far assumed both striated muscle types share a common origin. In fact, jellyfish striated muscles also express the ancient "muscle myosin," but they lack several essential components that are characteristic for the structure and function of striated muscles of "higher animals."

This indicates that despite their striking similarities, striated muscles of jellyfish and "higher animals" have evolved independently. This study sheds light onto how seemingly complex biological structures, such as striated muscles, could have evolved independently based on very ancient components.

Finally, because no one wants a home that looks exactly like their neighbors, Mr. Dixon and his employees offer a unique design for each customer reflecting their individual personalities.

Rarely does a business go above and beyond, not only beautifying their environment, but encouraging people to make more nature-friendly decisions while improving their standard of living.

Hugh Dixon has taken his business Stoneage Stonescapes to another level, raising the bar for all businesses in the northern Georgia area. Lawmakers close to deals on transportation, student loans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic and Republican negotiators neared a pair of election-year deals on Tuesday - one for a massive transportation bill, the other to prevent a doubling of interest rates on federal student loans, said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Reid, a Democrat, said it was possible that final bipartisan agreements could be reached on both long-stalled pieces of legislation before lawmakers leave at the end of the week for a holiday recess.

"We are very close to having everything done," Reid told reporters.

Jon Kyl, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, told reporters the student loan funding issue had been settled.

"We've reached an agreement on the bill, and the only thing that would be holding that up is the politics of the highway bill," Kyl said.

Senate aides said the two bills could be combined, passed together and presented to President Barack Obama as a package.

One major stumbling block still remains: how to deal with House of Representatives Republican demands to include accelerated approval of the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline from Canada to the United States as part of the highway bill.

Federal funding for road, bridge and rail projects - and as many as 3 million construction jobs - expires on Saturday, putting lawmakers under pressure to either come to an agreement on a two-year package proposed by the Senate, or craft a short-term extension at current funding levels.

The political stakes are high. Neither Democrats nor Republicans want to be blamed for stalling the bill, a move that would hurt the economy ahead of the November 6 general election.

"I think its chances today are better than 50-50 that we can get a bill done," Reid said, adding that he needed a hand from the top Republican in the House.

"But, we're still looking at Speaker (John) Boehner to help us get that over the finish line so we will see what happens on that," Reid said.

KEYSTONE ISSUE REMAINS

The starting point for talks was a two-year, $109 billion transportation package passed by the Senate. Republicans have won some concessions to streamline environmental reviews for certain types of road projects, and to ease proposed regulations for coal ash, a power-plant byproduct used in cement.

On Monday, senators involved in the talks, which are continuing, said they might need to work through a Friday deadline to finish the package, or pass a very short-term extension to give staff a week or two to draft text.

"There is a light at the end of the tunnel on the highway bill and it doesn't appear to be a train," said Chris Krueger and Joanne Thornton, analysts with Guggenheim Partners, in a note to clients.

But the analysts said it was not clear House Republicans would support the bill if did not include approval for the Keystone pipeline, which Obama put on hold earlier this year pending further environmental review.

Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said, "House negotiators ... are continuing to work towards a bill that includes real reforms in the way we spend taxpayers' highway dollars - and common-sense jobs initiatives" such as the Keystone pipeline project.

Obama has threatened to veto legislation that would overturn his decision on the Keystone pipeline.

Democrats have sought to separate the issue from the highway bill, and negotiators have discussed ways to hold a separate vote on the pipeline.

"You've got it down to a number of issues where now leadership really kind of makes the final call, and we'll see what's in and what's out," said Senator John Hoeven, a Republican who has pushed hard for the expedited approval.

Lawmakers must move fast to prevent a doubling of the interest rate on federal Stafford student loans to 6.8 percent that would take place on July 1.

In recent months, each side has swapped and rejected competing proposals to cover the $6 billion cost of extending the current interest rate of 3.4 percent for another year.

Failure to reach an agreement would cost an estimated 7.4 million students an average of about $1,000 each in added costs over the life of their college loans, the White House estimates.

Obama began cranking up pressure on Congress in April with campaign-style speeches at college campuses urging it to extend the low-rate for student loans.

Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney subsequently said that he, too, believes that the rate should be renewed, but Democratic and Republican lawmakers have wrestled for months over how to fund it without adding to budget deficits.

Maroon 5 'Born Again' With Pop-Heavy Overexposed

'It's sort of like, 'Screw you ... deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye,' ' Adam Levine says of the album's pop leanings.
By James Montgomery

Maroon 5's James Valentine and Adam Levine
Photo:

The first thing you'll probably notice about Maroon 5's Overexposed album is the lengthy list of collaborators attached to it: a Murderer's Row of pop hitmakers like Ryan Tedder, Shellback and Benny Blanco, with Max Martin helming it all as executive producer.

The second thing you'll probably notice is that it's called Overexposed. Because, reinvigorated by the worldwide success of their hit "Moves Like Jagger" — which marked the first time the band had written with outside sources (in this case Blanco and Shellback) — M5 make no bones about the fact that, this time out, they're aiming to become the most popular, inescapable and, yes, overexposed band on the planet.

"The title is kind of pre-emptively saying, 'Hey, we're overexposed. Deal with it,' " frontman Adam Levine told MTV News during the premiere of M5's new "One More Night" video. "Bands like to do this thing where they're like, 'Oh, man, we just didn't know. Oh my God, it's so crazy, we just wrote this song,' and that's true, but we like that. We want to have that experience, we want to have hits, we want to have songs that, internationally, people are going to know.

"It's exciting when you go to a country you've never been to, when you go to Jakarta, and they're singing the lyrics to 'Payphone,' it's so cool," he continued. "And that's something that we not only love, but we pursue, unabashedly. Our sense of purpose was very dialed in. ... We knew what we wanted, we knew in our minds how to achieve it on an album ... and I think we found it."

And, in a lot of ways, it's fitting that Overexposed (in stores now) comes exactly 10 years after the release of Maroon 5's debut disc, Songs About Jane. Because ever since that album, they've been hearing complaints from fans who want them to return to their roots. The difference now is that they no longer listen to those complaints. Backed by the biggest names in the pop business, Maroon 5 are going for greatness these days, and like it or not, they're not going to change course anytime soon.

"Songs About Jane was alienating a certain amount of our fanbase back then, and if we're not alienating a small percentage of our fanbase every time we make a record, we're doing something wrong," Levine said. "And usually, I find that people who complain about wanting that original sound would be the same people where, if you had a record that sounded like the first one, they would say, 'Why don't you guys branch out and change a little bit?' So it's sort of like, 'Screw you ... deal with it. Come with us on this journey or bye!'
