Gary Player tells Rory McIlroy to put golf before love

Young love is wonderful. Unless you are a golfer, apparently. If you don't believe that, ask golfing legend Gary Player.

Player, who won nine major titles in his career, offered some advice to Rory McIlroy in an interview over the weekend with website talksport. McIlroy seemed on the verge of becoming the best player in the world after winning the 2011 U.S. Open and the 2012 PGA Championship, but his game has fallen apart recently. Some blame the fact that McIlroy has a new girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, and spends some of his free time traveling to tennis tournaments to watch her play.

?When you?re in love as a young man, naturally golf seems to take second place for a while,? Player said. ?That?s natural. Love is still the greatest thing that ever happened in our lives."

?Now the thing is, for a man like Rory, the talent galore, he?s got to make sure he has a woman like I?ve got. We've been married for 56 years, and she has only encouraged me to do well and made all the sacrifices,? Player said. ?He?s got to be intelligent and find the right wife. If he finds the right wife ... he could be the man.?

So apparently, the lesson here for you women out there is to put all your dreams and aspirations away and devote time to making sure your boyfriend or husband can concentrate on his dreams and aspirations.?

The 53rd edition of the NewsChannel 7 Golf Classic is in the books, with history being made in both The Classic and Senior Men's at Bass Lake Golf Course.

Kyle Kolberg of Indianhead G.C. took home The Classic title, shooting a 72 on Sunday, 142 for the tournament. Kolberg began Sunday six shots back of first round leader Brian Krueger from Riverdale G.C. Kolberg won by three shots and his six-shot come from behind victory was the largest in tournament history.

Krueger had a tournament record setting 66 on Saturday giving him a three shot lead heading into Sunday's final day, but a day two 79 sent him to his fourth career runner-up finish.

This year's tournament also featured two hole-in-ones.

Jim Teymer from Eagle River G.C. shot the Classic's ninth hole-in-one on Saturday, the first since 1996.

2011 Senior champ Mark Heiting of Greenwood Hills C.C. followed up with the second hole-in-one in as many days and tenth in Classic history on Sunday.

Both were shot on the eighth hole.

In the Senior Men's, Joe Mertens of Greenwood Hills C.C. was crowned champion on Friday, edging out defending champ from Bullseye C.C. Rick Miller by one stroke. Miller double bogeyed 16 on Friday, and Mertens calmly sank a 12-foot par put on 18 to clinch his first career championship.

On Friday, the players had to endure two rain delays that totaled more than two hours. Saturday and Sunday was unseasonably cool and damp, but play was never halted during The Classic.

Saudi billionaire prince Alwaleed bin Talal urges less reliance on oil

RIYADH: Saudi billionaire prince Alwaleed bin Talal has warned global demand for the kingdom's oil is dropping, urging revenue diversification and investment in nuclear and solar energy to cover local consumption.

In letters to officials and published on Sunday on his Twitter account, King Abdullah's nephew warned that it was alarming that "92 percent of the government budget relies on oil".

"The world's reliance on OPEC oil, especially the production of Saudi Arabia, is in a clear and continuous drop," he wrote in letter addressed to oil minister Ali al-Naimi.

He said the threat from shale gas is "definitely coming", pointing to progress in that sector in North America and Australia.

"Revenue diversification is a must, and that necessitates a clear vision that should be implemented immediately," the Arab world's richest businessman said.

He proposed creating a sovereign wealth fund to manage the kingdom's reserves, which he said stood at $676 billion in March, citing official figures.

Alwaleed also urged action to press ahead with plans to develop nuclear and renewable energy to "reduce local consumption of oil as soon as possible".

Alwaleed was 26th on the Forbes 2013 list of billionaires, with an estimated wealth of $20 billion -- but he challenged the rating, saying he was worth $9.6 billion more.

No evidence against India Cements, Srinivasan may return as BCCI chief

The decks were on Sunday cleared for President-in-exile N Srinivasan's possible return to the BCCI top post after a two-judge probe panel found no evidence against his team Chennai Super Kings in the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal which rocked the sixth edition of the event.

Srinivasan could stage a comeback as BCCI chief as early as August 2 when the Board's Working Committee and the IPL Governing Council meet in New Delhi to take a final call on the issue.

The two-member panel, comprising former High Court Judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramanian, submitted its report to the BCCI Working Committee which met here today amid intense speculation that the Tamil Nadu strongman could get back the job.

The panel was mandated to enquire into the roles of Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who was the Team Prinicipal of Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and its co-owner Raj Kundra.

"There is no evidence of any wrongdoing found by the judges against Raj Kundra, India Cements and Rajasthan Royals.

The report will now be forwarded to the IPL Governing Council which will take a final decision when it meets on August 2 in New Delhi," BCCI vice-President Niranjan Shah told reporters.

Since the panel's order is binding on the BCCI which makes it clear that Srinivasan will return as Board chief.

Addressing a brief press conference, BCCI interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya said that the inquiry report will be forwarded to the IPL Governing Council as per the operational rules of the Board.

"IPL Governing Council will meet on August 2 in New Delhi to take a decision on these issues," Dalmiya said.

Asked whether India Cements have been given a clean chit in the report, he said, "The final call will be taken in the IPL Governing Council meeting.

"It will be discussed in the proper forum which is the IPL Governing Council. The Governing Council will examine the report and accordingly will take a decision. The copy of the report will be made public in due course," Dalmiya said.

There was, however, no clarity on Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's role in the scandal and it is learnt that the inquiry commission has not given him a "clean chit".

Shah, when asked whether Meiyappan has been given a clean chit, did not give any answer.

According to a source, Meiyappan has been cleared of spot-fixing in the inquiry report but could be involved in betting though there was no clear evidence.

Dalmiya said that the order of the probe commission was received only this morning and speculation that it had come to the BCCI earlier was not correct.

"The order was received by secretary Sanjay Patel here and it was placed in the afternoon before the Working Committee," he said.

Asked who will chair the August 2 meeting, Dalmiya said, "Let Mr Srinivasan decide. Let Srinivasan take his decision."

Dalmiya also said that BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit chief Ravi Sawani's report was discussed but since one player -- Ajit Chandila -- is in police custody, the probe could not be completed.

"We will wait for some time and then proceed accordingly.

Sawani is currently on leave because of his son's marriage.

Let him come back," Dalmiya said.

On who will chair the IPL GC meeting since chairman Rajiv Shukla has resigned, Dalmiya said, "I have requested him to continue. I have not accepted Shukla's resignation."

Dalmiya said the BCCI was in the process of finalising the itineraries for the tours of South Africa and New Zealand.

"It is under process. There are other tours also. We will come to you in due time," he said.

?Regarding the controversy over India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's alleged conflict of interest issue, Dalmiya said nothing will be swept under the carpet.

"I had said nothing will be swept under the carpet, many were asking what happened to that...," he said.

"We have changed our mode of working. We don't believe you to be after any player or anybody. Therefore, the players will have to declare their interest in sports management companies."

Talking about Delhi seamer Pradeep Sangwan, who has failed a random dope test conducted during IPL VI, Dalmiya said, "BCCI will follow the procedures as per anti-doping code."

He also said that the annual contract for coaches and support staff for special academies has been renewed for one year.

The IPL spot-fixing scandal broke out when India pacer S Sreesanth, along with two other Rajasthan Royals players Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan and 11 bookies, was arrested for alleged spot-fixing in the IPL.

The contracts of the tainted players were terminated by their franchise, which also lodged a criminal complaint against them.

It snowballed into a crisis for the BCCI when Board President N Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Meiyappan was arrested on charges of betting on May 26.

A internal probe panel, originally comprising former judges Chouta, Balasubramanian and the then BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale, was constituted on May 28 to investigate the allegations against Meiyappan, who maintained his innocence after getting bail.

Srinivasan, who owns the CSK franchise, remained defiant through the turmoil and refused to resign but had to step aside as BCCI President after a stormy emergent Board meeting on June 2 where Dalmiya took charge of an interim arrangement to run the Board's affairs pending the inquiry.

The upheaval led to the resignations of Board Secretary Sanjay Jagdale and Treasurer Ajay Shirke, who asked for Srinivasan's resignation on moral grounds.

Snowden's remaining docs unlikely to tie US hands

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the stuff of spy novels: The hunted-down protagonist wins in the end because he's got damaging documents squirreled away, a bargaining chip against the bureaucrats who want to silence him.

If National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden thinks he's living in such a thriller, legal experts say he ought to think again. Nothing he has is likely to scare off the prosecution.

Snowden, stuck at a Russian airport while he seeks asylum from several countries, has not overtly threatened the U.S. that he would release more damaging documents. But the journalist through whom he has been working, Glenn Greenwald, has said that blueprints that detail how the NSA operates will be made public if something should happen to Snowden.

"This is his insurance policy," said Greenwald, a columnist with Britain's Guardian newspaper who received Snowden's initial leaks and who communicates with the former NSA systems analyst. In a July 13 article in the Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Greenwald said, "The U.S. government should be on its knees praying every day that nothing happens to Snowden, because if something does happen, all the information would be revealed and this would be its worst nightmare."

The Justice Department is not discussing its prosecution strategy, though Attorney General Eric Holder has said the U.S. has no plans to seek the death penalty as it pursues criminal charges against Snowden. Holder made the comments in a letter to the Russian government dated Tuesday.

While the U.S. isn't eager for any more classified information to be disclosed, there's little chance Snowden will be able to use what he has as a bargaining chip to negotiate his prosecution or extradition. That's because giving into threats would risk opening the door for others to take similar action in the future.

The government must take the position: "We don't negotiate with extortionists," said Michael Chertoff, the former head of the Justice Department's criminal division and former secretary of homeland security. Chertoff said he can't recall a case in which the U.S. government has caved under this type of threat.

"I'm betting that there is virtually nothing that Snowden could do or threaten to persuade the (U.S. government) not to prosecute," said Peter Zeidenberg, a former federal prosecutor who was on the team that prosecuted I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the Bush administration official who revealed the name of a CIA officer. Zeidenberg said doing so would send a damaging message from the U.S.: "If you are going to steal secrets, get the crown jewels; that way, the government will never dare to prosecute."

Snowden leaked details of two top secret U.S. surveillance programs. He has been charged with three offenses, including espionage, and could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that if Snowden releases any more of the materials, Russia will not grant him temporary asylum.

"If the Obama administration responds with an even harsher hand against me, they can be assured that they'll soon find themselves facing an equally harsh public response," Snowden said in a June 17 online question-and-answer forum.

"Snowden has information enough to cause more damage to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had in the history of the United States," Greenwald said in the article in La Nacion.

Mark Zaid, an attorney who has represented people charged with espionage, said these threats from Snowden and Greenwald are a form of graymail, a tactic in which defendants charged with spying try to force the government to drop the charges by threatening to expose U.S. secrets on the witness stand.

Zaid said every time Snowden releases more documents it could create additional criminal charges. Zaid is not working on Snowden's defense and hasn't been contacted by the leaker. But if he were representing Snowden, Zaid said, "I'd tell him to shut up" and accept the marriage proposal from Russian spy Anna Chapman. On July 3, the attractive redhead who was swept up with nine other sleeper agents and deported from the U.S. in 2010 tweeted, "Snowden, will you marry me?"

"The only thing really he's got now is either minimize the penalties going forward or work out some favorable resolution he's comfortable with somewhere in the world," Zaid said of Snowden.

And even then, it would be difficult for the U.S. government to negotiate, he said.

"Because it's not just about Snowden anymore," Zaid said. "It's about anyone who would follow in his footsteps."

Graymail is a common defense tactic, and three decades ago a law was passed to combat it. Attorneys say the law was meant to let judges sort out the classified information behind closed doors and determine what the defense genuinely needs to make public. If the judge concludes the defendant cannot get a fair trial without spilling secrets, the government can decide whether to go forward or drop the case.

But Snowden has yet to enter into court proceedings. The government is in the process of trying to extradite him to face the charges.

U.S. officials have said what Snowden already released will harm national security, though it's too early to tell what damage has been done. The U.S. intelligence community has a good idea of what other documents he has.

"I wouldn't describe it as graymail," Chertoff said. "I would describe it as blackmail."

As Chertoff sees it, Snowden's message to the government is this: "If you do anything that Snowden doesn't like, he's going to try to hurt you by putting out information that could be damaging."

"To me, that's extortion," Chertoff said.

When Snowden arrived at Moscow's international airport on June 23 he was believed to be planning simply to transfer to a flight to Cuba and then to Venezuela to seek asylum. But the U. S. canceled his passport, stranding him. He hasn't been seen in public since, although he met with human rights activists and lawyers on July 12. He's applied for temporary asylum in Russia and has said he'd like to visit the countries that offered him permanent asylum ? Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

Blowout Raises Questions About Tar-Sands Oil (Op-Ed)

Danielle Droitsch is director of the Canada Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). This article originally appeared on the NRDC blog Switchboard. She contributed this article to LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

As new evidence is revealing that the blowout of a tar-sands well has been causing oil to leak for over four months ? contaminating a large area of Canada's Boreal Forest and killing animals ? a new report reveals that Alberta's regulatory system to prevent and enforce tar-sands operations is lax and failing.

The blowout from Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.'s Primrose tar-sands drilling operation was not revealed to the public until an anonymous government scientist leaked it to the press. According to a Mother Jones article, the spill ? which has released at least 4,500 barrels of tar-sands oil ? was reported to have started on May 21 and was still releasing oil as of Tuesday, July 23. The ongoing blowout, coupled with the report on the province's failed regulatory program, raises questions about oversight of the tar-sands industry ? especially given that neither the Alberta government nor the company has confirmed the cause of the blowout, the rate of seepage or a plan to stop the spill. It also raises questions about this particular method of tar-sands extraction, called "in situ," which is projected to be the dominant way that the industry extracts tar sands in the coming years.

This spill also underscores that, despite its outward appearance of appearing less impactful, in situ tar-sands development comes with major risks. Moreover, in situ tar sands development is significantly more carbon-intensive than tar sands strip-mining operations ? an important element for the Obama administration to consider as it makes a decision over the proposed Keystone XL tar-sands pipeline.

The uncontrolled spill from the Primrose tar-sands drilling operation is located on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (where the Canadian military conducts live-fire exercises), and it has already killed dozens of animals, including beavers and loons.

The Toronto Star, which broke the story to the public, said that more than 4,500 barrels (nearly 200,000 gallons) of bitumenhave been released by the spill. At least 26,000 barrels of a tar sands and water mixture have been recovered in clean-up operations , and the blowout has contaminated almost 100 acres ? or an area the size of 75 football fields.

Tar-sands drilling operations require the injection of high-pressure steam into deep reservoirs, creating cracks in underground geological formations, and essentially turning the earth into an oven so that the bitumen can be melted out. Despite the fact that they tend to have significantly greater greenhouse gas emissions than mining, fragment vast swaths of land and use a tremendous amount of water, tar-sands drilling operations are often promoted by industry as the "environmental friendly" method of tar-sands extraction. It is estimated that 80 percent of tar sands can be accessed using in situ or drilling methods.

The anonymous scientist who broke the story to the Canadian media said, "Everybody [at the company and in government] is freaking out about this. We don't understand what happened. Nobody really understands how to stop it from leaking, or if they do, they haven't put the measures in place."

This is not the first time there has been a spill of tar sands from the Primrose operations. Another release of oil occurred in 2009,and after an investigation and apparent changes to steam-injection operations, government regulators permitted Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. to resume operations. The newly created Alberta Energy Regulator issued a press releaseon July 18 (nine weeks after the spill started), which indicated the released had occurred, but failed to detail the nature of the spill, the amount that had spilled and what actions were being taken to stop the leak.

Just this week, a new report from Kevin Timoney at Treeline Ecological Research and Peter Lee at Global Forest Watch Canada reveals widespread problems in the system to oversee violations of environmental laws for preventing major leaks, like the one in Cold Lake, Alberta. The comprehensive, 600-page report reveals that less than one percent of violations from tar-sands operations are enforced. The study evaluated over 4,000 violations of Alberta's environmental laws, but found that 99 percent of those violations did not result in fines or other enforcement actions. The authors noted the Alberta environmental enforcement rate is far below that of the United States. According to the study, "the average enforcement rate for violations of the Clean Water Act in the United States for the period from 2004 to 2007 was 16 percent, over 17 times the environmental enforcement rate in Alberta's bitumen sands region." And the report also noted that of the 50 U.S. states, only three states had worse performance than Alberta.

The report details chronic failures to enforce, poor oversight, and failure to provide timely access to accurate and complete information. The report also profiles substandard safety procedures, poor communications and emergency response, and lax monitoring by industry and regulatory agencies. This has led to "systemic problems in management, reporting, monitoring, and environmental protection?," according to the report.

The report's authors reviewed over 9,000 environmental incidents or violations related to tar-sands development in northeastern Alberta during a period from 1996 to mid-2012. There was a minimum of 4,063 alleged contraventions (or perceived violations of legislation) and Alberta took enforcement actions 0.9 percent of the time. Most enforcement actions imposed only minor financial penalties, and it appears media attention and public involvement facilitated enforcement measures.

The report details numerous examples where violations of environmental rules were not reported to local communities. One such example occurred in April 2011, when a pipeline operated by Plains Midstream spilled 1.2 million gallons of oil onto boreal wetlands. The company was criticized for failing to communicate with the Lubicon Cree, an affected community, but the government of Alberta failed to take enforcement action until a public report was released by Greenpeace.

The report also indicates that the government of Alberta continuously failed to provide timely and accurate information to the public following major spills. Journalists who have attempted to investigate oil spills in Alberta have also faced several hurdles with efforts to access information. The Alberta government was given a grade of "D"in the 2012 freedom-of-information audit conducted by Newspaper Canada.

The debate over the proposed Keystone XL tar-sands pipeline has put Alberta's tar-sands operations and its regulatory system under a microscope. Government leaders in Alberta have made several claims to audiences in the United States that the province is a world leader on environmental issues. Alberta Premier Alison Redford has traveled to the United States defending Alberta's environmental record. In a USA Today editorial she said, "We stand ready to demonstrate our strong track record on responsible oil-sands development." And at another speech at the Brookings Institution, she said Alberta is "home to some of the most environmentally friendly , progressive legislation in the world." Despite these claims, there are indications that Alberta's environmental record is lacking.

Local communities living near, and affected by, tar-sands operations deserve an independent audit of the effectiveness of Alberta's regulatory system, including public reporting. And U.S. decision-makers evaluating whether to approve or reject the Keystone XL tar-sands pipeline should independently evaluate Alberta's regulatory system in light of the new blowout development.

With respect to the recent blowout, the Alberta government owes the public more information, including information on the amount of oil that has leaked, the area affected, wildlife impacts, water-quality monitoring and information as to the cause of the occurrence. And, U.S. decision-makers evaluating whether to approve or reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline should independently evaluate Alberta's regulatory system in light of this new development.

HOBBIT: PJ Facebook Blog of Last Day Recap

HOBBIT: PJ Facebook Blog of Last Day Recap

Tim here with your recap of Peter Jackson's Facebook Blog of the last day of shooting on The Hobbit films. It looks like it was a long day (20 hours) for Mr. Jackson and the crew of The Hobbit, but they managed to get everything they needed. As Jackson noted: "15 years of Tolkien? 771 days of shooting?"
The bullet points of information that one can gather from PJ's last day blog:
  • The last day had two units (main & splinter) shooting on various stages: A, F, and K
  • At midday PJ conferenced via video chat with Howard Shore for Music Spotting.
  • "Spotting" involves talking through edited scenes with Howard, and figuring out everything he needs to do a first pass at the music composition - where music should start and stop, what mood it should have, themes to use, moments to punctuate. To stay on schedule, Howard needs 10 mins of cut footage every week.
  • The score for The Desolation of Smaug is going to be terrific, according to PJ.
  • They were a little frustrated with An Unexpected Journey because they had to revisit so many of the LOTR themes: The Shire, Rivendell, Galadriel, Gollum, and the Ring.
  • This time around, apart from a couple of Ring moments, the score is all new: Beorn, Mirkwood, The Woodland Realm, Laketown, Bard and Smaug all give Howard the chance to write brand new themes, and he's knocking it out of the park!
  • With Andy Serkis busy being a monkey at the moment (Caesar, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), the directing duties for the splinter unit have fallen on Christian Rivers's shoulders.
  • PJ's relationship with Christian Rivers goes back to 1986 when he recieved a fan letter from the 13-year-old school boy Christian, which happened to have drawings of wizards and dragons. By Braindead Christian joined the team as a storyboard artist, and has made all the storyboards for PJ's movies since. He became an animation director on King Kong and won an Oscar. He's now directing the splinter unit, and developing projects of his own.
  • It proves that fan letters can pay off!
  • The tent is where PJ has spent more time in the last two and a half years than anywhere else. He shares it with Victoria, the script supervisor, Jabez the editor, Seb, his assistant and Caro, the producer.
  • Jabez and PJ try to edit previously shot scenes while he's filming.
  • Caro and PJ have worked together since Heavenly Creatures.
  • His big chair has a story. He used to always sit the small wooden and canvas "director's chair" until Dec, 2000, when Harry Knowles visited during the very last week shooting LOTR. Harry wasn't going to fair too well in a small chair, so the Unit guys bought a crappy old arm chair from a second hand store. When he left, and the shoot was finished, PJ tried it out and found it quite comfy. Caro had it recovered. He's used it ever since. Another good luck charm.
And that sums up what Peter Jackson wrote. Below are the pictures he posted:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits IMAX 3D and RealD 3D theaters December 13th, 2013, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again hits IMAX 3D and RealD 3D theaters December 17th, 2014.

Psychopathic Criminals Have "Empathy Switch"

I think this is mainly to do with tribalism, which is a very very ancient set of instincts (we share them to a large degree with the other apes, just look at how chimp tribes behave towards each other). People are built to fit themselves into kin groups, which works pretty well when you're talking about relative small societies of a hundred or a few thousand individuals. Essentially it is an "us vs. them", "friend vs. stranger" recognition system.

If someone is seen as a stranger, they are a potential threat, and actions can be taken against them that one would not take against a member of one's own kin group or society (this is why murder of a relative or close friend is still seen in most societies as a much higher crime than murder of a stranger or an acquaintance). Through the ages demagogues have been able to manipulate this basic tribal instinct to group people based upon relationship to further all sorts of atrocities. Whether it's persecution, exile, slavery or genocide, once you've convinced a populace that your desired target group is somehow alien, you can convince that populace to do almost anything.

It's as the old story goes (and time for the Godwin); Hitler convinced an entire nation made of up people who adhered to a religion whose basic tenet was "love thy brother" that persecution and ultimately murder of millions of members of ethnic groups (Jews and Roma in particular) was perfectly fine, and yet even Hitler was a vegetarian who loved his dogs.

Whether this "empathy switch" in psychopaths is related to that I don't know. Obviously even in normal people there is a way to trigger the dehumanizing of groups if they can be convinced that they are alien threats. Mind you even look like genocides like the Jewish Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide, there was long standing prejudice and mistrust against the targeted group, so it's not as if appeared out of nowhere.

Commentary: Indian media hype about China-India border dispute benefits none

Indian media, which have traditionally focused heavily on the border disputes between New Delhi and Beijing, are now asserting again that Chinese troops have crossed the "border" between the two countries.

This came just a few months after similar reports soured to some extent the atmosphere of a visit by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to India.

Fortunately, Beijing and New Delhi, with political wisdom, made joint efforts to defuse the tensions timely, and the visit, part of Li's maiden overseas tour since assuming premiership in March, turned out a big success.

Li and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, through candid talks and in-depth discussions, substantially enhanced strategic mutual trust, which is a valuable thing for two countries that fought a brief border war in 1962.

Looking back on Indian media hype about "Chinese border intrusions," one has to admit such sensational reports are indeed harmful to the China-India relationship.

Such reports have only served to further sow misunderstandings between Indians and Chinese even at a time when their leaders are working hard to manage their differences and to build a constructive relationship that can benefit both sides.

Back to the border disputes, it is worth noting that both Beijing and New Delhi have repeatedly said they are committed to maintaining peace and stability along the border before the issues are completely resolved.

The disputes, a historical hangover, were not created in one day, neither will they be resolved overnight. It is unwise to let isolated incidents along the border to negatively affect the promising China-India relationship.

China and India, as two major emerging economies, have much to gain by further deepening political and economic ties.

Despite sometimes frosty political relations, China has become one of India's top trading partners. Both countries have agreed to increase their bilateral trade, standing at 66.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2012, to 100 billion dollars by 2015.

The two economies, with distinctive competitive advantages, can also work on more joint investment projects.

Beijing and New Delhi should build on the positive momentum yielded by Premier Li's visit. After all, the right track forward for the two gaint neighbors is to boost investment, expand trade and strengthen links so that both countries can benefit from the win-win cooperation.

As for media from both countries, playing up the border disputes is hardly a constructive way of doing things.

Paper planes are having a moment. Two weeks earlier, while Skip Schumaker was on the mound, a well-crafted plane landed with a flourish between the mound and home plate:

Cancer survivor hails surrogate sister-in-law who helped give her the baby boy she had always longed for

AS she gazes lovingly at her beautiful new baby boy, Denise Coleman looks like any other proud new mum.

But Denise hasn?t just waited nine months to set eyes on her precious son ? she?s waited nine years.

And it?s only thanks to her amazing sister- in-law that Christopher James is finally here.

Cancer survivor Denise, 35, and her husband Billy, 45, tried desperately to have a child both naturally and then through IVF.

But after 10 failed attempts, Denise was starting to lose hope and it was having a huge effect on their life and marriage.

That?s when sister-in-law Lynda Coleman stepped in and offered to carry their child for them.

And last month, delighted Denise and computer engineer Billy watched as little Christopher James was born.

Denise, from Shettleston, Glasgow, said: ?Holding him in my arms for the first time was just phenomenal. We just couldn?t believe he was actually here.

?I?m so proud of how my baby boy got here and I can?t wait to tell him the whole story when he?s old enough.

?I want him to know what an amazing thing our amazing angel Lynda has done for us.?

Denise said that when she held her baby for the first time, she finally felt complete.

She said: ?I always knew I wanted to be a mum but when I was 25, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and was advised to have a hysterectomy.

?I asked for a second opinion because I didn?t want to give up my dream of having a family and the second doctor said it was possible to remove just my cervix and my lymph nodes.?

Denise decided to take that option as she was so desperate to be a mum and in March 2004, she was given the all-clear.

Billy and Denise married that September and started trying for a baby straight away. A year later, they still were still trying and started thinking about IVF.

Tests showed that while Denise was ovulating normally, the scar tissue from her cancer surgery could have been preventing her from getting pregnant.

Denise said: ?The first time they harvested my eggs, they said that they were top quality so we had a good chance of getting pregnant.

?They fertilised the first egg successfully but when they dropped it into my womb, it failed to implant.

?We tried again and again with different doctors and techniques. I just didn?t want to give up. I was convinced I?d be a mum one day.

?Every time it failed, it got me really down. I felt inadequate as a wife because all I ever wanted to do was have a family.

?Looking back, I can?t believe I carried on for so long.

?One doctor told me that I should start to consider my options because IVF was unlikely to work for us.

?He asked if I?d thought about surrogacy but I could never have asked anyone to become a surrogate for me. It was just too much to ask of anyone.?

Denise holds her longed-for baby minutes after his birth
Denise holds her longed-for baby minutes after his birth
?

What she didn?t know was that Billy?s brother Steven, 41, and his wife Lynda, 39, had been discussing the possibility of being their surrogate for months.

Denise said: ?It was July 2011, when Steven and Lynda came up to the house and said there was something they wanted to discuss with us.

?I couldn?t believe it when Lynda said she wanted to be a surrogate. I just burst out crying.

?Even now, when I think about it, I start filling up again.?

Steven and Lynda had discussed the idea with their children Kelsey, who was 14 at the time, and eight-year-old Carley as they felt it was important that the whole family was happy for the process to go ahead.

Denise said: ?The girls understood that their mum would be carrying my baby for me. I knew Lynda wasn?t the type of person to rush into anything and that she was strong enough to cope with the emotional side of it all.?

Using the money that Denise and Billy had saved up for additional IVF treatment, they were able to fund the treatment to allow Lynda to become a surrogate by implanting their fertilised egg into her womb.

Denise said: ?She had to go through the same process of hormones and implanting the egg that I?d already been through 10 times. It was amazing that she was willing to do that for someone else.?

But there was more disappointment to come.

The first embryo failed to develop and Lynda lost the baby at just seven weeks.

Denise said: ?Lynda vowed she?d keep trying again and again until she was 40. She was convinced that it would work.?

The second implantation led to another pregnancy but again there were problems from the start and a scan at 23 weeks found she had miscarried again.

After Denise?s 10 failed attempts and Lynda?s two miscarriages, it was to be No13 that finally brought some luck to the family.

Denise said: ?The next attempt was totally different from the start.

?Lynda had a really good feeling about it and she was really glowing.

?We got past the 12-week scan but it took until the 20-week scan until I realised that my baby was going to be a reality.?

After a trouble-free pregnancy, Lynda was due to have a Caesarean on June 20. But on June 15, Denise got a call at 2.30am from Lynda to say her waters had broken and she was contracting.

Denise said: ?We were so excited and rushed to the hospital but they made us go back home and wait because she wasn?t going to have the baby for a few hours.

?At 10am, Lynda called and told us to come back because she was going to have our baby by C-section that morning, so we had a mad rush back to the hospital.?

Denise and Billy were allowed to be in the operating room at the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital as Christopher James was born at 12.12pm weighing a healthy 7lbs 6oz.

Now the family are closer than ever after their incredible experience.

Denise said: ? Lynda and I speak on the phone every day and I?m always sending her photos.

?Billy and Steven had always had a really close brotherly bond but the relationships I have with Billy?s mum Mary, Lynda?s family and my own parents have totally changed.

?Christopher James is our miracle baby and he has brought so much joy to our family.

?We never thought the day would come when we would be holding our own baby in our arms, but Lynda made it possible.

?It makes all the years, the agony of IVF and the heartache worth the pain and the wait.

?Every day, we still look at him and can?t believe he is finally here, he is so precious to
us all.?

Lynda added: ?I have two amazing children who have brought me and my husband so much joy and love every single day of their lives.

?I couldn?t imagine anyone not having that and we knew Denise and Billy deserved to have their own family. It?s just an amazing feeling to know we could do that for them.

?I would not change a thing. I love my gorgeous nephew Christopher James. He will be a special wee boy in my life forever.?

Aurora shooting wedding

AURORA, Colo. (AP) -- Two people injured in the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., one year ago marked the anniversary Saturday afternoon by getting married.

Eugene Han and Kirstin Davis said they wanted to turn July 20 into a celebration.

Friends who also survived the shooting took part in the ceremony at Village East Baptist Church in Aurora as senior pastor Robert McClendon gave a prayer for the couple and for those still grieving.

McClendon said the time is "both happy and sacred."

Han and Davis were among the 70 people injured in the shooting. Twelve people were killed.

Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio?

Tybs, have you used MRDS ? What did you find clunky about it ?

I've used MRDS for several projects, including my recent MechWarfare entry, Boojum. The bot fared just OK, but I like MRDS a lot. I've just started using ROS and of the two I currently prefer MRDS. It won't really be a fair comparison, though, until I know ROS better.

>>I can't get my head around what MSRDS actually is though. Is it open?
It's open in that you can write services for whatever hardware you want. You can use any .NET language. You can't get at the source code for the runtime components of MRDS (called CCR and DSS) like you can for ROS. I'm not sure I'd want to even if I could. MRDS has a really brilliant architecture to it, but there is a learning curve involved. The curve is worth the payoff.

>> is it flexible?
I haven't found anything that I couldn't do with MRDS yet. My biggest inflexibility complaint regarding it is that MRDS no longer runs on WinCE. MRDS requires Windows Emdedded at the least. My bot runs C# and C++ code under Windows Embedded 7. It communicates over WiFi to the operator console running C# WPF code under Windows 8 desktop. You can see the UI here:
http://mech-warfare.com/images/phoca...3/image112.JPG

>> Can i use any hardware?
MRDS requires .NET. So your processing hardware will need to run that. I think there are now ARM based .NET boards out there. I don't know if MRDS can run on those. You can communicate with other hardware using USB, Serial, I2C, Ethernet, or whatever else is available. For example, Boojum uses both a Pico-ITX board that runs MRDS and an Arduino nano that handles I/O and gaits.

>> What libraries are there?
These are called 'services' under MRDS. The basics are there and more services come all the time. For example, an MRDS Kinect service is all the rage right now. I think ROS has more available than MRDS aright now.

>> What is the community like?
Small. MS did a fantastic job promoting and supporting MRDS when it forst came out, but it's dropped off. Have you been here:

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington has confirmed an adult woman died while riding the Texas Giant Friday night.

While news of the death quickly spread across Twitter, few details were confirmed as of 8 p.m.

Officials at Six Flags did not reveal how the woman died.

Six Flags official statement:

We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant. Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, the ride has been closed pending further investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time.

Originally an all wooden roller coaster introduced to the park in 1990, the ride was redesigned with a steel track and re-opened in April of 2011 during the theme park's 50th anniversary. The ride's tallest height is 153 feet and has a drop of 147 feet.

Six Flags says the ride has "a record-breaking bank" of 95 degrees, "steeper than any wooden coaster on the planet."
