Cowgirls Fall To Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team dropped its first game after the Christmas break, falling 71-56 to Texas Wesleyan on Friday evening in Fort Worth.

The first half was a back and forth affair and HSU led 20-19 with 7:02 to play in the half. Neither team led by more than four points up until that point. That is when TWU went on a 19-4 run to take a 38-24 lead with :18 to play in the half. HSU trailed 38-26 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cowgirls came out and made a run at the Rams and cut the deficit to 49-46 with 10:28 to play on a Joanna Daniel 3-pointer. TWU scored the next five points and the Cowgirls were never closer than six points the rest of the way.

The Cowgirls struggled with the pressure of TWU as the Rams forced 24 turnovers and turned those into 29 points. HSU shot just 34.9 percent in the game.

Kara Looten led the Cowgirls with 15 points and added eight rebounds. Daniel was the only other Cowgirls in double figures with a career-best 10 points. Angela Newcombe had 13 rebounds for HSU.

Four Rams hit double figures with Kristi Alexander, Nicole Terral and Octavia Mullins recording 13 points each and Raven Smith adding 12. Mullins also had 10 rebounds.

The Cowgirls are now 4-6 on the year and will return to American Southwest Conference action on Thursday at Louisiana College. Texas Wesleyan improved to 8-2 on the year.
