The crazy kids at HP are not giving up building tablets, and after two failed attempts, the Windows 7-based HP Slate 500?and the webOS-running HP TouchPad, the company will be launching at least one Windows 8 tablet in the foreseeable future.
In fact, it looks like the recently-appointed HP CEO Meg Whitman has already confirmed that the company will have a Windows 8 tablet in stores by the end of the year. Details are sketchy at this point, and we don?t even have a product name yet, but it seems that HP will keep making PCs for at least one year, including tablets:
Speaking at a Wall Street Journal conference in Menlo Park, California, Whitman said the initial tablet will be based on Intel Corp.?s technology. It?s ?not clear? when Windows 8, the update to Microsoft?s operating system, will be released for devices running chips based on ARM Holdings Plc technology, she said. Microsoft hasn?t given an official release date for Windows 8.
We?ve seen previous reports suggesting that HP is going to have its own Windows 8 tablet(s) once the new OS is official, so we?re really not surprised to hear Whitman confirm such plans as long as the company is not out of the personal computer business.
But if it?s one thing that we learned is that we shouldn?t get excited about HP tablets. The HP Slate 500 was not a success, even though the company tried to disguise it as an enterprise hit.?The company sold a few thousand units and then moved on probably hoping nobody will remember them ? we weren?t impressed with the?Slate 2?either.?Then it purchased webOS ? well it purchased Palm altogether ? a promising mobile platform that Palm failed to properly bring to market. But when it came to launching a proper iPad rival running an improved webOS version, HP failed again. The webOS sold out only because the company discounted it to $99 a pop, a price too good to pass even if webOS isn?t really your thing.
In other words, HP tried everything, building a Windows tablet and building a tablet using its own OS and it was not successful in either case. Windows 8 looks great in demoes, and we expect to see Microsoft unveil more details about Windows 8 at MWC next week, but will an HP Windows 8 have what it takes to fight the iPad 3?
