Movie review ? Despicable Me 2: In a jam? Then Gru?s your man!

What is a supervillain-turned-daddy and thoroughly nice guy to do? In the case of Gru (Steve Carell), why, make inedible jams and jelly, of course.

As it turns out, the paraphrased saying ?you can?t teach a very old evil scientist new tricks? is true in the case of Dr Nefario (Russell Brand).

After helping Gru to steal the moon in the delightful first Despicable Me film three years ago, Dr Nefario quits to seek out another supervillain to work with, leaving the minions without a plan and, more frighteningly, in charge of the jam.

But where there are baddies, even ex-ones, there?s an anti-villain league, and who better to catch a ruthless, dangerous and macho villain than an ex-villain?

So Gru is recruited by Lucy (Kristen Wiig), a secret agent who can do anything Gru can do, but in six-inch heels.

With her unique fighting style, which combines jujitsu, Krav Maga, Aztec warfare and krumping, she?s pretty scary.

Together she and Gru seek out El Macho (Benjamin Bratt) ? in a shopping mall where he?s hiding behind a front of any number of unlikely shopkeepers, among them a wig maker and a restaurant that prides itself on its salsa.

Margo, Edith and Agnes are just as cute as they were when Gru adopted them in the first film and the opening sequence, when the hired fairy princess doesn?t turn up for a birthday party, is priceless as Gru gets trussed up in pink to make sure his daughters aren?t disappointed.

Ditto the scene of what happens to happy-go-lucky minions when they are given a shot of something nasty by the villain ? it?s purple and it ain?t pretty?.?.?.

While the children will love this film (though it might be 20 minutes too long for the under-fives), the adults will love it more, as slyly funny asides are dealt out like servings of extra hot salsa.

As expected though, it is the minions who hold sway over the children and the two directors, Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, save the nonsense vocals of these delightful Twinkie-shaped, denim-wearing, slap-fighting creations for themselves.
