When you have a former champion interested in fighting you next, then there’s a good chance you’ve worked your way into the title shot picture. Due to a five win streak and victories over the likes of Mark Bocek, Evan Dunham and Donald Cerrone, the situation above describes the UFC’s #6 ranked lightweight, Rafael dos Anjos.
Recently, former champ Benson Henderson relayed on “The MMA Hour” that he was interested in fighting the rising veteran, as “Smooth” believes it would be an “entertaining” and “good” fight. Of course, the lightweight also believes it’s a good “match-up” for him. So what does dos Anjos think of the idea? When asked recently by MMA Junkie.com the 29 year-old stated:
“Actually, Henderson is one of the names I was thinking about,” he said. “I was thinking I should faceT.J. Grant, Gilbert Melendez or Ben Henderson next. That’s because I want to beat someone who will put me in a title shot.”
A win for either Henderson or dos Anjos would certainly be a key addition to their record. Dos Anjos was also asked if he was surprised to hear the champ cite him as a possible next opponent, but the Brazilian responded:
“No, I’m not surprised at all,” dos Anjos said. “I’m on a five-fight win streak.”
So, now it will be interesting to see if the UFC’s down with the idea, as it looks as though Henderson and dos Anjos are all in favor. That said, and as dos Anjos noted, there are several other contenders looking for fights. In addition to Grant and Melendez, rising star Khabib Nurmagomedov is in need of an opponent as well.
