It lasted nearly fourteen years, but the days of Windows Live Messenger?or MSN Messenger, as it was named until 2005?are officially coming to an end.
By the end of April, Microsoft will officially retire its standalone Windows Live Messenger service by merging the instant messaging client with Skype.
I find this move to be rather nostalgic, as someone that is born in the early 1990s. At least for me, MSN Messenger was the de facto instant messaging service prior to the days of Facebook, Twitter and even text messaging becoming more traditional mediums for communicating.
Microsoft will officially shut down access to Windows Live Messenger on March 15th, meaning that power users of the service will be forced to switch over to Skype or use a competitive service such as Google Talk or AIM. But, legacy users that barely log on to MSN won?t be transferred until later in April.
Are you sad to see Live Messenger go?
