1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?
Jillian Bullock, 51, fitness and wellness expert, health advocate, speaker, author, and life coach.
CEO of Jillian Bullock Enterprises, LLC, a fitness, wellness and empowerment company. Creator
of Fighting Spirit Warriors, a fitness for self-defense program for girls and women.
2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?
Bruce Lee.
3. What did they do to inspire you?
Bruce lived a life with a great spirit. He not only talked the talk when it came to fitness and health, but he walked the walked. He ate nutritionally and trained in martial arts hours a day, trying to perfect his craft, his style. He also studied philosophy, religion, spirituality, ancient history of martial arts, and many other scholarly books, which helped him have inner peace. His behavior and actions on movie sets, with his wife and children, and during interviews are things I remembered as a teenager growing up during the 70?s. Bruce made me focus on being a martial arts and training like a champion should.
4. How did their lesson change your life?
I got into Tae Kwon Do at age 12 because at age 11 I had been raped by a family friend. I was angry at the world, along with being depressed. I didn?t know how to process my feelings and I often got into fights at school. I once heard Bruce Lee say studying martial arts helps one learn discipline. I felt I could channel my anger in a healthy way through karate. Also, by training and focusing on a goal ? earning my black belt ? it gave me something to feel good about.
5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?
I teach children about blending the mind, body and spirit and living a life of goodness, respect, fitness and health. With children in this country being so violent and disrespectful, much more so than when I was growing up, I talk to my grandkids and let them know that it?s important to be respectful of others and to care for themselves in wholesome and healthy ways.
6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?
Our country does have a major problem with children who are obese so I tell children why exercising is important and ways they can do things that are fun, but they will still benefit from exercising. I let them know that it?s okay to play video games and watch TV, but a part of each day, at least 60 minutes, should be devoted to exercise, just get up and get moving. I also teach them about eating healthy. Introduce fruits and veggies into a children?s lives when they are little and they won?t crave sweets
and junk foods so much.
